Monarchs of Scotland

It is often argued that the country of Scotland was forged by the Cinaed (anglicised as Kenneth) Mac Alpin, King of Scots, on his conquering of the Picts and creating a combined kingdom that has lasted to the present day. Little of this is true in essence.

In fact, the word Scoti was only ever used by the Romans to describe the people from Ireland who raided Roman Britain, in other words the Gaels, Kenneth was King of Dal Riata, or Dalriada, a Gaelic kingdom that stretched from the northern coastline of Antrim in Ireland to the western seaboard of Scotland (mainly Argyll, Lochaber and part of Ross), and he probably became King of Picts by marriage. Indication that the Picts had become influenced by the Gaels for many years prior to this is evident in the names of Atholl and Argyll, the latter actually meaning “land of the eastern Gaels”.

*** consult other than Wikipedia, which is too conflicted in its origins of Kenneth.

Also mention Pictish lands of Fortriu, Circinn, etc.

* this needs to become a full history rather than a description of a particular king. The list of kings should be straight to the point, where as a full history can wander down speculative pathways.
