Lords Carlyle of Torthorwald (c.1473)

1st Lord Carlyle, John Carlyle, b.?, a.c.1473, d.1500-1501

The progenitor of the Carlyles accompanied Robert the Bruce into Annandale during the time of King David I and the name is taken from the town of Carlisle. John Carlyle was the son of William Carlyle of Torthorward, who attended Margaret, daughter of James I, on her marriage to the Dauphin in 1436. He was instrumental in repelling the banished Douglases from the West Marches and as reward was given extensive lands.

2nd Lord Carlyle, William Carlyle, b.?, a.1500-1501, d.b.1525

Grandson of the 1st Lord and son of John Carlyle, Master of Carlyle, both wives unknown. He was knighted when Alexander, son of James III, was made Duke of Ross.

3rd Lord Carlyle, James Carlyle, b.?, a.c.1525, d.1525-1526

Son of the 2nd Lord and Janet Maxwell, sister of John Maxwell, 3rd Lord Maxwell (for whom see the earls of Nithsdale).

4th Lord Carlyle, Michael Carlyle, b.?, a.c.1526, d.1575

Younger brother of the 3rd Lord.

5th Lord (Lady) Carlyle, Elizabeth Carlyle, b.?, a.1575, d.1642

Grand-daughter of the 4th Lord (and either his first wife Jane Charteris or his second wife Mariota Maxwell) and daughter of William Carlyle, Master of Carlyle (b.?, d.1572) and Janet Johnstone, daughter of James Johnstone of that Ilk.

6th Lord Carlyle, James Douglas, b.?, a.1608, d.?

Son of the Lady Carlyle and her first husband Sir James Douglas of Parkhead (b.?, d.1608). The title passed to him on the death of his father. His eldest son, William Douglas (b.?, d.1638), died abroad, and his second son George Douglas was given the lands of Parkhead. After the death of William, James Douglas sold the Torthorwald estate to William Douglas, 1st Earl of Queensberry and resigned the title, which is now dormant, although there are descendants of younger sons of the 4th Lord who may be able to petition the House of Lords.
