Lords Innerwick (1638)
1st Lord Innerwick, James Maxwell, b.?, a.1638, d.1650
James Maxwell was the son of Robert Maxwell of Kirkhouse and Nichola
Murray, sister of John Murray of Lochmaben, 1st earl of Annandale. He was Gentleman of the Bedchamber to
Charles I and was created 1st Lord Innerwick in 1638. In 1646 he was
further promoted as 1st Earl of Dirletoun and 1st Lord
Kingston & Elbottle.

He had no male
heirs and the earldom became extinct on his death. He married Elizabeth de Boussoyne
(b.?, d.1659). His daughter Elizabeth Maxwell (b.?, d.1659) married Sir William
Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Hamilton and his
daughter Diana Maxwell (b.c.1619, d.1675) married Charles Cecil, Viscount
Cranbourne, heir of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury.
