Lords Rollo of Duncrub (1651)
1st Lord Rollo, Andrew Rollo, b.1577, a.1651, d.1659
The originator of this family was Richard de Rollo, an Anglo-Norman who came
north with King David I. The family claimed close ties to the dukes of Normandy
and were descended from the original Rollo, the founder of the Viking fiefdom
of Normandy. This Rollo had come to an arrangement with Charles III of France,
being given the lands he already occupied as a feudal holding in return for
defending France against any other Viking invasions. The Norman Vikings became
Christian, intermarrying amongst the French, and although there were occasional
confrontations with the French kings, eventually became part of the French
establishment. Their geographical position also resulted in relations with the
English Court, which eventually resulted in William the Conqueror’s invasion of
England in 1066. The Rollos performed mostly secretarial duties on behalf of
various Scottish kings and the family were awarded the lands of Duncrub in
Perthshire during the reign of Robert III, which was eventually raised to a
barony. Sir Andrew Rollo was Sheriff of Perthshire during the Civil Wars and
was fined during the Act of Grace.
