1st Lord Dirletoun, John Halyburton, b.?, a.c.1440, d.c.1454

 

Halyburton is an ancient surname taken from lands in Berwickshire. John Haliburton (b.?, d.1355) married the heiress of the de Vaux family, through which he obtained the lands and castle of Dirletoun. His grandson Walter Halyburton married Isabella Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany. Their son, also Walter Halyburton (b.?, d.c.1447) became High Treasurer of Scotland and married Mary Douglas (b.?, d.c.1420), daughter of Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas, and who had previously been married to David Stewart, 1st Duke of Rothesay, heir to the throne. Their son was raised to the peerage as 1st Lord Dirletoun.

 

2nd Lord Dirletoun, Patrick Halyburton, b.?, a.c.1454, d.?

 

Son of the 1st Lord and Janet Seton, sister of George Seton, 1st Lord Seton (for whom see the earls of Winton).

 

3rd Lord Dirletoun, George Halyburton, b.?, a.?, d.c.1490

 

Younger brother of the 2nd Earl.

 

4th Lord Dirletoun, George Halyburton, b.?, a.c.1490, d.?

 

Grandson of the 3rd Earl and unknown wife, and son of Alexander Halyburton and Helen Shaw, daughter of Sir James Shaw of Sauchie.

 

5th Lord Dirletoun, Patrick Halyburton, b.?, a.?, d.1506

 

Uncle of the 4th Lord, being a younger son of the 3rd Lord.

 

6th Lord (Lady) Dirletoun, Janet Halyburton, b.?, a.1506, d.1560

 

Daughter of the 5th Lord and Margaret Douglas. She married William Ruthven, 2nd Lord Ruthven, ancestor of the earls of Gowrie, and their son Patrick Ruthven succeeded to both his father’s and his mother’s titles.
