Lords Gray (1445)

1st Lord Gray, Andrew Gray, b.c.1390, a.1445, d.1469

Gray is a very common name through Britain, but the ancestor of this particular family was of Norman descent and obtained lands in the Carse of Gowrie during the time of Bruce. Sir Andrew Gray of Broxmouth married Janet Mortimer, daughter of Sir Roger Mortimer of Foulis and their son, also Andrew, was one of the hostages sent to England in 1424 in place of James I. He was exchanged for another hostage in 1427 and from about this time became involved in the politics of the time. He accompanied Princess Margaret to France in 1436 for her marriage to the Dauphin and in 1449 appointed to the Committee of Estates. He also served as Commissioner to England. He was made Master of the Household to James II in 1452 and at that time began the construction of Castle Huntly in the Gowrie (not to be confused with Huntly Castle in Aberdeenshire).

He returned to Scotland in 1583 and soon befriended the young James VI, becoming Master of the Wardrobe in 1584 and made a Privy Counsellor in 1585. He was sent as an Ambassador to England to plead for the Mary, but on returning after Mary’s execution was declared a traitor and banished.
