Lords Carmichael (1647)

 

1st Lord Carmichael, James Carmichael, b.1579, a.1647, d.1672

 

The Carmichaels were a very old family based in upper Lanarkshire. James Carmichael was Master of Ceremonies for the future King Charles I in 1623, and was Chamberlain of Scotland from 1627 to 1630. In 1627 he was created 1st Baronet Carmichael of Westraw and Hyndford in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. In 1634 he was invested as a Privy Counsellor, and he was Lord Justice Clerk from 1634 to 1636 and later in 1649. He was fined by Cromwell in 1654 as part of the Act of Grace.

 

2nd Lord Carmichael, John Carmichael, b.1638, a.1672, d.1710

 

Grandson of the 1st Lord and Agnes Wilkie, and son of William Carmichael, Master of Carmichael (b.b.1620, d.1657) and Lady Grizel Douglas, daughter of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas (for whom see the earls of Angus). He was a Privy Counsellor and Keeper of the Privy Seal in 1689 and High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1694 to 1699. In 1701 he was created 1st Earl of Hyndford, 1st Baron Carmichael of Carmichael and 1st Viscount of Inglisberry and Nemphlar.

2nd Earl of Hyndford, James Carmichael, b.?, a.1710, d.1737

 

Son of the 1st Earl and Beatrix Drummond, daughter of David Drummond, 1st Lord Maderty (for whom see the earls of Perth). He was a Privy Counsellor in 1704 and reached the rank of Brigadier-General in 1710.

 

3rd Earl of Hyndford, John Carmichael, b.1700-1701, a.1737, d.1767

 

Son of the 2nd Earl and Lady Elizabeth Maitland (b.?, d.1753), daughter of John Maitland, 5th Earl of Lauderdale. He reached the rank of Captain in the 3rd Foot Guards in 1733, and was a Representative Peer from 1738 to 1761. He was High Commissioner to the General Assembly from 1739 to 1740, Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire and a Knight of the Thistle. He was Ambassador to Prussia in 1742 and again from 1744 to 1750, and Ambassador to Austria from 1752 to 1764. He was made a Privy Counsellor in 1750.

 

4th Earl of Hyndford, John Carmichael, b.1710, a.1767, d.1787

 

Grandson of the 1st Earl and son of William Carmichael (b.1671, d.1759) and Helen Craig (b.1690, d.?). He had no children.

 

5th Earl of Hyndford, Thomas Carmichael, b.c.1750, a.1787, d.1811

 

Great-grandson of the 1st Earl, grandson of Sir Daniel Carmichael (b.?, d.1708) and Barbara Lockhart, daughter of Sir George Lockhart of Carnwath, and son of Daniel Carmichael (b.?, d.1765) and Emilia Hepburn. He never married.

 

6th Earl of Hyndford, Andrew Carmichael, b.c.1758, a.1811, d.1817

 

Younger brother of the 5th Earl. On his death, all his titles became dormant or extinct.
