Earls of Kintore (1677)

 

1st Earl of Kintore, John Keith, b.?, a.1677, d.1714

 

Son of William Keith, 6th Earl Marischal and Lady Mary Erskine, daughter of Sir John Erskine, 18th & 2nd Earl of Mar. He held Dunnottar Castle against Cromwell and was created Knight Marischal at the Restoration. In 1677, he was created 1st Earl of Kintore, 1st Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith Hall, and made a Privy Counsellor. He was a supporter of the Revolution in 1688 and of the Act of Union in 1707.

 

2nd Earl of Kintore, William Keith, b.?, a.1714, d.1718

 

Son of the 1st Earl and Lady Margaret Hamilton (b. 1641, d.?), daughter of Thomas Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Haddington. He took part in the Battle of Sheriffmuir on the side of the Jacobites and as punishment was deprived of the office of Knight Marischal.

 

3rd Earl of Kintore, John Keith, b.c.1699, a.1718, d.1758

 

Son of the 2nd Earl and Catherine Murray (b.?, d.1726), daughter of David Murray, 4th Viscount Stormont. He was re-instated as Knight Marischal in 1733.

 

4th Earl of Kintore, William Keith, b.c.1702, a.1758, d.1761

 

Younger brother of the 3rd Earl. The earldom became briefly dormant after his death, as the nearest heir-male, George Keith, the 10th Earl Marischal, had been attainted in 1716.

 

 

Lords Falconer of Halkertoun (1646)

 

1st Lord Falconer, Alexander Falconer, b.1595, a.1646, d.1671

 

The Falconers were an illustrious family of long standing, having been close to the monarch since the time of William the Lion in 1200, when the first recorded King’s Falconer, Ranulph, was given various lands, whose name he changed to Hawkertoun in respect of his office. More recent members of the family had been MPs and Lords of Session and Alexander Falconer was the latest to hold such a position.

Son of the 1st Lord and Anne Lindsay, daughter of John Lindsay, 8th Lord Lindsay of the Byres.

 

3rd Lord Falconer, David Falconer, b.1668, a.1684, d.1724

 

Son of the 2nd Lord and Margaret Ogilvy, daughter of James Ogilvy, 2nd Earl of Airlie. He died unmarried.

Son of the 1st Lord’s brother Sir David Falconer of Glenfarquhar (b.c.1598, d.c.1683) and Margaret Hepburn.

 

2nd Baronet Falconer, Alexander Falconer, b.c.1663, a.1717, d.1727

 

Son of the 1st Baronet and Margaret Graeme (b.?, d.1720). In 1724 he became 4th Lord Falconer.

Son of the 1st Baronet’s younger brother Sir David Falconer of Newton (b.1640, d.1685) and Mary Norvell (b.c.1654, d.?).

 

6th Lord Falconer, Alexander Falconer, b.1707, a.1751, d.1762

 

Son of the 4th Lord and Catherine Margaret Keith (b.c.1619, d.1762), daughter of William Keith, 2nd Earl of Kintore. He had no children.

 

7th Lord Falconer, William Falconer, b.1712, a.1762, d.1776

 

Younger brother of the 6th Lord. He served as a soldier in Holland and settled in Groningen.

 

8th Lord Falconer, Anthony Adrian Falconer, b.?, a.1776, d.1804

 

Son of the 7th Lord and Rembertina Maria van Iddekinge (b.1713, d.1779). He obtained a revival of the dormant earldom in 1778 on the death of George Keith, 10th Earl Marischal, mentioned above, changing his surname to suit.

Son of the 5th Earl and Christina-Elizabeth Sighterman (b.?, d.1809), of Groningen.

 

7th Earl of Kintore, Anthony Adrian Keith-Falconer, b.1794, a.1812, d.1844

 

Son of the 6th Earl and Maria Bannerman (b.c.1771, d.1826), daughter of Sir Alexander Bannerman of Kirkhill, 6th Baronet Bannerman of Elsick. He was created 1st Baron Kintore in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1838.

 

8th Earl of Kintore, Francis Alexander Keith-Falconer, b.1828, a.1844, d.1880

 

Son of the 7th Earl and his second wife Louisa Hawkins (b.1802, d.1841).

 

9th Earl of Kintore, Algernon Hawkins Thomond Keith-Falconer, b.1852, a.1880, d.1930

 

Son of the 8th Earl and Louisa Madeleine Hawkins (b.?, d.1916). Educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge, he became a Lord-in-Waiting in 1885, and in 1886 a Privy Counsellor and Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. In 1889 he was created a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George and made Governor of South Australia, resigning in 1895, serving a second period as Lord-in-Waiting from then until 1905. He was also made a Fellow of the Royal Society and received a variety of honorary awards. He was Aide-de-Camp to King Edward VII in 1901 and was invested as a Knight of the Thistle in 1923.

 

10th Earl of Kintore, Arthur George Keith-Falconer, b.1879, a.1930, d.1966

 

Son of the 9th Earl and Lady Sydney Charlotte Montagu (b.1851, d.1932), daughter of George Montagu, 6th Duke of Manchester. Educated at Eton, he served in the Scots Guards. He reached the rank of Captain in 1914 and fought in the First World War. On his death without issue, the UK barony became extinct. The Lordship of Falconer of Halkertoun (of which he was 12th) became dormant, as did the baronetcy.

 

11th Earl (Countess) of Kintore, Ethel Sydney Keith-Falconer, b.1874, a.1966, d.1974

 

Older sister of the 10th Earl.

 

12th Earl of Kintore, James Ian Baird Keith, b.1908, a.1974, d.1989

 

Son of the 11th Countess and John Lawrence Baird, 1st Viscount Stonehaven (b.1874, d.1941). Educated at Eton, he studied at the Royal School of Mines and reached the rank of Major in the Royal Mechanical Engineers. He became a local councillor for Kincardineshire and later served on Grampian Regional Council. He was also accepted into the Royal Company of Archers.

 

13th Earl of Kintore, Michael Canning William John Keith, b.1939, a.1989, d.2004

 

Son of the 12th Earl and Delia Virginia Lloyd (b.?, d.2007). Educated at Eton and RMA Sandhurst, he reached the rank of Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.

 

14th Earl of Kintore, James William Falconer Keith, b.1976, a.2004

 

Son of the 13th Earl and Mary Plum. As well as being 14th Earl, he is also 14th Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith-Hall, 5th Baronet Baird of Ury, 4th Viscount Stonehaven and 4th Baron Stonehaven of Ury, the last three in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He is also Chief of Clan Keith.

 

 

The courtesy title for the heir is Lord Inverurie.
