Younger
brother of the 3rd Earl. The earldom became briefly dormant after
his death, as the nearest heir-male, George Keith, the 10th Earl Marischal, had been attainted in 1716.

The Falconers
were an illustrious family of long standing, having been close to the monarch
since the time of William the Lion in 1200, when the first recorded King’s
Falconer, Ranulph, was given various lands, whose name he changed to Hawkertoun
in respect of his office. More recent members of the family had been MPs and
Lords of Session and Alexander Falconer was the latest to hold such a position.
